Pet-Friendly Vacation Rental Checklist: What to Confirm Before You Book

Your dog is part of the family, so the trip only works if the rental works for them too. But “pet friendly” on a listing can mean very different things: one dog or two, any size or under a weight limit, welcome in the whole house or kept out of certain areas, free or with an added fee.

This checklist covers what to confirm before you book so you are not sorting it out the week before you leave. It also shows how these details play out at the pet-friendly homes in the Swack Vacations portfolio, so you can see what clear answers look like.

Confirm Which Pets Are Welcome and How Many

Start with the basics, because they decide whether a property is even an option.

  • Type of pet. Most pet-friendly rentals allow dogs only. Across Swack Vacations, pet-friendly homes welcome dogs and do not allow cats.
  • Number of pets. Most pet-friendly Swack Vacations homes list a limit of two dogs, so confirm the limit for the specific home you are considering.
  • Size and breed. Some homes accept any size with approval, while others apply breed restrictions. Pompous Pelican in South Nags Head welcomes dogs of any size with approval. Rio Rodanthe on Cape Hatteras Island asks for breed approval. The Crooked Oak Lodge at Deep Creek Lake applies breed restrictions set by the homeowner’s insurance and asks that dogs be well-socialized and trained.

Eight Swack Vacations homes are pet friendly: Blue Bayou and Whispering Winds at Lake Norman, Pompous Pelican and Rio Rodanthe on the Outer Banks, and Beary Fine, The Crooked Oak Lodge, Lazy Creek, and The Tippy Canoe at Deep Creek Lake.

Our condos in Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Garden City, Key Largo, Panama City Beach, and St. Thomas do not allow pets. If you travel with a service animal, ask our team about your specific property before you book. At the Key Largo condos, service animals must be registered before arrival.

Ask About Approval, Breed Rules, and Fees

A listing that says “pets welcome” may still require approval, and approval can take a little time. Ask these questions early, ideally before you pay a deposit.

  • Does my dog need to be approved before I book, or after? Most Swack Vacations pet-friendly homes list approval as part of the process, so send your dog’s breed and size up front.
  • Are there breed restrictions? At Beary Fine, breed restrictions may apply. At The Crooked Oak Lodge, they do. If your dog is a mixed breed, ask how the policy applies.
  • Is there a pet fee, and what does it cover? Pet-friendly Swack Vacations homes charge an additional fee. Ask whether it applies per stay or per pet so there are no surprises at checkout.

Approval and breed rules are part of planning, not an obstacle. At The Crooked Oak Lodge, for example, the breed rules follow the homeowner’s insurance. When you book direct, you can ask these questions and get answers from the team that manages the home.

Find Out Where Your Dog Can and Cannot Go

Being allowed in the rental does not always mean being allowed everywhere at the rental. Ask about the spaces your group will use most.
One confirmed example: at Blue Bayou and Whispering Winds on Lake Norman, dogs are not permitted in the pool area. That is worth knowing if you planned to keep your dog beside you while the kids swim.

  • For any home you are considering, ask:
  • Are there rooms or areas that are off limits to pets?
  • Can dogs be on the furniture, or should you bring your own bed and blanket?
  • Can dogs be near the pool, hot tub, or any other water feature?
  • Are there community or resort rules for pets on shared grounds? This matters at Deep Creek Lake, where all four homes sit in the Waterfront Greens community, which has paved walking paths and pond-side gazebos. Ask whether pets are welcome on the community grounds.
  • Are there rules about leaving a dog alone in the home?

Also check the destination itself. Beaches, state parks, and trails often have their own leash rules and seasonal limits, so look those up before you plan a full day around your dog.

Match the Setting to How Your Dog Travels

Once the policy checks out, think about the trip itself. The three pet-friendly destinations in our portfolio feel very different.

On the Outer Banks, Pompous Pelican and Rio Rodanthe are both oceanfront homes with direct access to the beach. Pompous Pelican sleeps up to 16 and has a private outdoor hot tub and three levels of open decking. Rio Rodanthe sleeps up to 20 and has a private walkway to the beach. Nags Head is a dog-friendly town. Check the current leash rules for the beach you plan to visit.

On Lake Norman, Blue Bayou sleeps up to 19 and Whispering Winds sleeps up to 15. Both are lakefront homes with a private dock and a wooded setting, which suits groups who want lake days and quiet evenings. Remember the pool area rule above.

At Deep Creek Lake, Beary Fine, The Crooked Oak Lodge, Lazy Creek, and The Tippy Canoe all have private indoor pools and sit in the Waterfront Greens community. The Crooked Oak Lodge and The Tippy Canoe each sleep up to 20. If your trip includes hiking, the area offers Deep Creek Lake State Park and Swallow Falls State Park, so confirm trail pet rules before you go.

Your Pre-Booking Pet Checklist and Next Step

Before you book any pet-friendly rental, confirm:

  • Which pets are allowed, and how many
  • Size and breed rules, and whether approval is required
  • The pet fee and what it covers
  • Which areas of the home and property are off limits
  • Community, resort, or destination rules for pets

That list takes a few minutes and removes most of the surprises that catch pet owners off guard.
