Deep Creek Lake sits in the mountains of Western Maryland, and it’s the kind of place that works for almost any kind of group trip. There’s a lake for swimming and boating, a ski resort for winter trips, hiking trails, golf courses, and a downtown area with restaurants and shops. Whether you’re planning a summer week on the water or a winter weekend on the slopes, there’s enough here to fill a multi-day itinerary without much driving in between.
If you’re staying with us at one of our Deep Creek Lake vacation homes in the Waterfront Greens community, here’s a rundown of what’s nearby and how to plan around it.
Spend Time on Deep Creek Lake
The lake itself is the main draw, and there’s a lot to do on the water. Deep Creek Lake State Park offers swimming areas, hiking and biking trails, and nature exhibits, making it a good stop for a few hours or a full afternoon. If your group wants to get out on the water directly, look into boat rentals through the marinas in the downtown Deep Creek area, about 10 minutes from our Waterfront Greens properties.
For something more low-key, the community itself has a catch-and-release fishing pond, a canoe and kayak station, and a community dock, so you don’t need to leave the neighborhood to get out on the water. In the summer, several lakeside restaurants are also accessible by boat, which makes for a fun change of pace for a group dinner.
Visit Wisp Resort, Year-Round
Wisp Resort is about 17 minutes from our Waterfront Greens properties and isn’t just a winter destination. In colder months, it’s the spot for skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and ice skating. The rest of the year, the mountain coaster and zip-lining keep things active for families and groups who want a thrill outside of the water.
If your trip includes a mix of ages, Wisp is a good way to give everyone something to do, whether that’s a ski lesson for the kids or a scenic ride down the mountain coaster for the whole group.
Explore Swallow Falls and the Surrounding Trails
For a quieter day, Swallow Falls State Park is worth the drive. It’s home to Maryland’s tallest waterfall, along with scenic trails that wind through the forest. It’s an easy way to get the group outdoors without a long hike, and it’s a nice contrast to a lake-focused itinerary if you want one day that’s more about scenery than activity.
Deep Creek Lake State Park also has its own hiking and biking trails if you’d rather stay closer to the water.
Golf, Mini Golf, and Downtown Deep Creek
Golfers have several options in the area. Thousand Acres Golf Club is a championship 18-hole course with lake and mountain views, and Wisp Resort has two additional courses, Lodestone and Fantasy Valley. Several of our Waterfront Greens properties also sit within walking distance of a 9-hole par-3 community course, so a quick round doesn’t have to mean a long drive.
If your group includes younger kids or you just want something more casual, the community’s mini-golf course is an easy option close to home.
Downtown Deep Creek, about 10 minutes away, has restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and breweries. It’s a good stop for a grocery run on arrival day or a casual dinner out partway through your trip.
