What cookies and similar tools are

Cookies are small text files a website saves in your browser. We also use similar tools that work the same way: pixels and tags (small pieces of code that report a page visit or action), browser storage, and server-to-server connections that send the same event information directly to a partner. In this policy, "cookies" covers all of these. First-party cookies are set by our own sites. Third-party cookies are set by our partners, such as Google or Meta, and those partners may also recognize your browser on other websites.

How you control cookies

  • Our cookie banner and Consent Preferences. Choose which optional categories to allow when you first visit, and change your mind anytime with the Consent Preferences link at the bottom of every page or the link above. Depending on where you are, optional cookies may stay off until you allow them, or be on until you turn them off.
  • Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for targeted advertising.
  • Our booking site. The booking site runs on the Guesty platform and is a separate website, so choices you make on swackvacations.com may not carry over to it. Use any cookie notice the booking site shows, or your browser settings, to manage cookies there.
  • Browser settings. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the site from working, and clearing cookies may also clear your saved choices.
  • Partner settings. You can adjust ad preferences directly with Google and Meta, and opt out of Google Analytics with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

The cookies we use

Essential (always on)

These keep the sites secure and working and remember your cookie choices. They cannot be turned off.
  • Termly (our consent tool): Remembers your cookie choices on swackvacations.com (Cookies and lifetimes set by Termly)
  • Google reCAPTCHA (on our forms): Protects our contact and quiz forms from spam and abuse (Cookies: _GRECAPTCHA and related Google cookies; lasts up to 6 months)
  • Guesty (booking site): Runs the booking site, including the reservation steps and checkout (Cookies set by Guesty; lasts from one visit up to 12 months)
  • WordPress: Sign-in and settings for our site administrators only (Cookies: wordpress_*, wp-settings-*; lasts from one visit up to 12 months)

Performance and functionality

These remember preferences and power optional features. If you turn them off, some features (such as embedded maps or chat) may not work.
  • Google Maps: Shows embedded maps on property and contact pages (Cookies set by Google; lasts up to 13 months)
  • AudioEye: Remembers accessibility tool settings you choose (Cookies set by AudioEye; length varies)
  • Pop-up and chat tools, when active (OptinMonster, LeadConnector): Remember whether you have seen or closed an offer, and keep a chat conversation open (Cookies set by each provider; length varies)

Analytics and customization

These show us how guests use our sites, such as which pages and properties are most helpful, so we can improve them.
  • Google Analytics 4 (through Google Tag Manager): Counts visits and measures how people move from our site through the booking steps (Cookies: _ga, _ga_[ID]; lasts 2 years)
  • Ahrefs Web Analytics: Counts page views, referring sites, and device types. Ahrefs states this tool does not use cookies or persistent identifiers.

Advertising

These help us show our ads to people who may be interested, including people who visited our site, and measure which ads lead to reservation requests. Turning this category off opts you out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for targeted advertising.
  • Meta (Facebook and Instagram) Pixel and Conversions API: Measures page views, booking clicks, and reservation requests from Meta ads; builds audiences for our ads. When you submit a form, a hashed email or phone number may be included for matching. (Cookies: _fbp, _fbc; lasts 90 days)
  • Google Ads (linked to Google Analytics): Measures and personalizes Google ads (Cookies: _gcl_au; lasts 90 days)
  • OpenAI (ChatGPT ads measurement pixel): Measures page views, property views, booking clicks, and reservation requests from our ads in ChatGPT (Cookies and lifetimes set by OpenAI)

We update this policy when we add, remove, or change a tool, and post the new version here with a new "Last updated" date.
